The Rock and the Roundabout by Katie Buckley
It was forbidden
To trespass beyond those barriers
And venture onto the virgin pavement
Of the new roundabout.
So we did.
It was prohibited
For us to clamber upon that rock
And champion ourselves upon it,
Choosing to view the world around us
From a raised perspective.
So we did.
It was unauthorized
For you to kiss me that night,
Under the omniscient night sky and
Clairvoyant stars,
And under no circumstances
Were you to tell me
That we should be together.
And so you did.
Perhaps
It was merely a conquest:
To be the first,
Pioneers of the pavement.
Or maybe it was
The irresistible, intoxicating draw
Of the forbidden:
To be righteously wrong,
Rebels of the rock.
And, of course,
It might have been neither.
I hope so.
But something tells me
There is little gravitational pull
To the rock and the roundabout
Once the novelty of
The off-limits and the untouched
Is gone.
